[Edaily Reporter JAEMIN SONG ] LG Innotek’s automotive camera modules will serve as the “eyes” of Amazon’s autonomous robo-taxi, “Zoox.” By extending the camera technology it has accumulated through smartphones to commercial robo-taxis, the company appears to be accelerating its push into the physical artificial intelligence (AI) market, including autonomous driving and robotics.

LG Innotek announced on the 27th that it will supply 5-megapixel automotive camera modules to Amazon’s autonomous driving subsidiary, Zoox, over the next several years. It is reported that the two companies have maintained a collaborative relationship, jointly developing camera modules since the early stages of Zoox’s robo-taxi development.

This supply agreement is significant because it goes beyond simply providing components for testing; it involves the long-term supply of core components for commercial robo-taxis that will be deployed in actual ride-hailing services. Zoox is not converting existing passenger cars into autonomous vehicles but is instead designing and manufacturing dedicated robo-taxis that lack a driver’s seat, steering wheel, or pedals.

LG Innotek’s camera modules are designed with different field-of-view angles depending on their mounting location on the vehicle. Multiple cameras provide 360-degree detection of the vehicle’s surroundings to identify pedestrians, other vehicles, and obstacles, thereby minimizing blind spots. The video footage collected by the cameras is combined with data from LiDAR, radar, and infrared sensors to help the robo-taxi recognize its surroundings and determine its driving path.

The company has also applied ultra-precise optical design technology developed through its smartphone camera business. Durability has been enhanced to maintain consistent performance even under extreme temperature fluctuations, and the modules feature waterproofing to ensure stable detection of the surrounding environment even in adverse weather conditions such as rain or snow.

The fact that Zoox has entered a phase of full-scale business expansion is also fueling expectations for increased supply volumes. Zoox launched a driverless ride-hailing service for the general public in Las Vegas, USA, last September and is expanding its service to users in San Francisco as well. The 220,000-square-foot production plant built last year in Hayward, California, has the capacity to produce more than 10,000 robotaxis annually.

Industry observers are also noting this order as a significant step toward diversifying LG Innotek’s customer and business portfolio. In the first half of this year, revenue from a single customer—presumed to be Apple—totaled 8.8415 trillion won, accounting for 77.9% of total revenue. Expanding the technology and mass-production capabilities gained from its smartphone-centric optics business into the autonomous driving sectors of North American automakers and big tech companies has long been identified as a key mid- to long-term goal.

In fact, revenue from automotive cameras increased for two consecutive quarters this year, driven by expanded supply to new models from major North American customers. The Mobility Solutions business also saw revenue of 510.9 billion won in the second quarter of this year, a 10% increase compared to the same period last year. Last year, new orders for Mobility Solutions totaled 4.8 trillion won, and the order backlog at year-end reached a record high of 19.2 trillion won.

LG Innotek is fostering autonomous driving sensing solutions—which combine LiDAR and radar with automotive cameras—as a future growth engine. At CES 2026, the company unveiled a heating camera that melts snow and frost, a cleaning camera that removes moisture and debris from lenses in one second, and a LiDAR system capable of detecting objects at distances of up to 200 meters. Building on these innovations, the company aims to grow revenue from its automotive sensing solutions business to over 2 trillion won by 2030.
