Low-Carbon Housing Combining Heat Pumps and AI-Enabled Appliances Unveiled
[Edaily Reporter JAEMIN SONG ] SamsungElectronics and LGELECTRONICS have simultaneously unveiled future residential models that combine artificial intelligence (AI) home appliances with heat pumps and energy management technologies. Both companies are contributing their respective residential solutions to the electrification of heating and energy efficiency improvements—key initiatives being promoted by the government as part of the Korean Green Transition (K-GX).
On the 14th, SamsungElectronics introduced heat pump-based heating and cooling solutions at the “Samsung AI Modular Home.” (From the fourth person on the left) Kim Seong-hwan, Minister of Climate, Energy, and Environment; Park Seung-hee, President of SamsungElectronics’ CR Division; and Kim Cheol-gi, Executive Vice President of SamsungElectronics’ DA Business Division. Smart Cottage Village” in Jincheon County, North Chungcheong Province, in quick succession.
The Samsung AI Modular Home is a residential model that combines factory-prefabricated housing modules with AI appliances and SmartThings-based energy solutions. Appliances are installed and registered during the module manufacturing stage, allowing residents to use AI home features immediately upon moving in.
The homes integrate high-efficiency appliances, heat pumps, solar panels, and energy storage systems (ESS). Using “SmartThings Energy,” residents can monitor and control solar power generation and electricity consumption in real time. SamsungElectronics also introduced the “EHS All-in-One,” which provides cooling, floor heating, and hot water supply through a single outdoor unit. This product enhances energy efficiency by recycling waste heat generated during the cooling process to produce hot water.
On the 14th, LGELECTRONICS introduced a residential solution combining AI appliances, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), and energy technologies to Kim Seong-hwan, Minister of Climate, Energy, and Environment, at the “LG Smart Cottage Village” located in Jincheon County, North Chungcheong Province. SamsungElectronics presented a case study in Cornwall, UK, where a 1,500-unit complex incorporates heat pumps, solar power, and energy storage systems (ESS), with “SmartThings Pro” used to centrally manage energy consumption across individual households and public facilities.
LG Corp. Smart Cottage is an energy-self-sufficient modular home that integrates heat pumps, AI appliances, a Home Energy Management System (HEMS), ESS, and solar power generation into a single platform. It manages both energy production and consumption by integrating appliances, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems into the living space.
LGELECTRONICS explained the structure and key technologies of the Smart Cottage and demonstrated a living environment where each system works in tandem. By incorporating HVAC technology as a standard feature and offering solar panels as optional add-ons, the company enables users to enhance energy self-sufficiency according to their specific housing conditions.
Samsung and LG Corp. plan to expand their presence in the future housing market by emphasizing AI-based integrated management and energy self-sufficiency, respectively. The two companies’ solutions—which connect home appliances, power generation, and storage equipment centered around heat pumps—are expected to serve as a model for the electrification of heating, thereby reducing fossil fuel use and carbon emissions in the residential sector.
