Distributor Universal Pictures announced that “The Martian” surpassed 8 million cumulative viewers this afternoon, on its 24th day in theaters. This is the fastest pace among films released this year, beating the records set by “Spider-Man 4” and “The Man Who Lives with the King”—which both surpassed 8 million viewers on their 26th day in theaters—by two days.

Since its release on the 5th, “The Odyssey” has consistently held the No. 1 spot at the box office. It reached 1 million viewers on its fourth day, 2 million on its sixth day, and surpassed 7 million on its 19th day.

The film “Odyssey” depicts the journey home of Odysseus, the hero of the Trojan War. It garnered worldwide attention even before its release as the first film in cinematic history to be shot entirely with an IMAX film camera. IMAX refers to a large-format analog film system using 70mm film—significantly larger than standard 35mm film—along with the associated filming and projection technology. As a result, IMAX theaters have become extremely popular, leading to a surge in scalping.

If “The Odyssey” continues its current box office success, it is expected to catch up to the record held by “Spider-Man 4,” currently in second place, before long. As of the previous day, “Spider-Man 4” had attracted a cumulative audience of approximately 8,297,000.

The likelihood of reaching 10 million viewers is also increasing. “The Odyssey” continued to draw more than 150,000 viewers on weekdays this week—its fourth week in theaters—demonstrating unwavering popularity.
