[Edaily Reporter Kim Kyeo-Re ] On the 4th (local time), nine days after massive flash floods struck the Nepal-Tibet border region, two survivors who had been trapped in a hydroelectric power plant tunnel were dramatically rescued.

According to Reuters and other sources, Nepalese rescue teams succeeded in rescuing two Nepalese employees alive while conducting a search operation in the Trisuli 3A hydroelectric power plant tunnel in the central-northern Bagmati Province on the 4th.
Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, Nepal’s Minister of Energy, stated, “One person has just been safely rescued from the Trisuli 3A tunnel.” Subsequently, Sudhan Gurung, Minister of Home Affairs, added, “I have just received word that another person has also been rescued.”
The first worker rescued was Sanjay Saa, the plant’s chief mechanic, and the second was Kabir Maharjan, a mechanical supervisor. Maharjan is unable to move his hands and legs, while Saa is reported to be in stable condition. They are currently being transported to a hospital in Kathmandu.
Saa, who was rescued first, reportedly emerged conscious and covered in mud, and asked rescue workers, “What day is it today?” He stated that he had communicated with other colleagues inside the tunnel by voice, raising hopes for the rescue of additional survivors.
Rescue teams reportedly cleared the tunnel entrance, which had been blocked by mud and massive boulders, and discovered the men approximately 170 meters inside. It took about six days just to gain access to the tunnel, and while clearing the debris, rescue teams supplied oxygen through small openings in anticipation of finding survivors inside.
Nepalese rescue authorities had been conducting a search for survivors, reporting that approximately 600 people were trapped in the hydroelectric plant’s tunnel. So far, more than 270 people have been rescued near the hydroelectric plant.
The location where they were rescued is in the Trisuli River basin, the same area as the power plant where nine South Koreans are missing. It is approximately 30 km away from the area where the South Koreans went missing.
According to Nepal’s Disaster Management Authority, as of the 4th, at least 1,259 people have died and more than 5,000 are missing due to the floods. The nine South Koreans believed to be trapped at Trisuli 3A remain missing.
