[Edaily Reporter LEE DAWON ] #SamsungE&A has secured a contract for a fertilizer plant project in Saudi Arabia worth approximately 4.7 trillion won. SamsungE&A will serve as the sole engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor to build ammonia and urea fertilizer production facilities by 2030.

SamsungE&A announced on the 11th that it has signed an EPC contract for the “SAN-7 Project” with Saudi Arabia’s SABIC Agri-Nutrients. The contract value is approximately $3.5 billion (approximately 4.7 trillion won).

The signing ceremony took place on the 9th (local time) at SABIC’s headquarters in Jubail, Saudi Arabia. Attendees included Namgung Hong, President of SamsungE&A; Faisal Mohammed Al-Fakih, President of SABIC; Abdulrahman Al-Fagi, Chairman of SABIC Agri-Nutrients; and Fahad Misfer Al-Batar, President.

The SAN-7 project involves the construction of ammonia and urea fertilizer production facilities in the Jubail Industrial City in eastern Saudi Arabia. Using natural gas as a feedstock, the project will produce 3,500 metric tons of ammonia per day, which will then be used to produce 7,700 metric tons of urea fertilizer per day. All of the urea fertilizer produced is scheduled to be exported.

A post-combustion carbon capture system (PCCC) will also be installed at the plant. This system captures carbon dioxide generated during the ammonia production process and utilizes it in the synthesis of urea fertilizer. SamsungE&A expects this to reduce carbon emissions while enhancing economic efficiency.

Since entering the Saudi market in 2003, SamsungE&A has completed approximately 30 projects in the country. In 2024, the company secured the $6 billion Fadili Project. It also has experience carrying out numerous projects in the Jubail Industrial Complex, where this project is being developed.

The client, SABIC Agri-Nutriants, is a subsidiary of SABIC, the Saudi state-owned petrochemical company, specializing in fertilizers. Since 2003, SamsungE&A has carried out petrochemical projects commissioned by SABIC, including EO, EG CORPORATION, and PP.

Ammonia and urea plants are a key business area for SamsungE&A. The company is currently executing a low-carbon ammonia project in the United States as well. For the SAN-7 project, SamsungE&A plans to apply modular and automation technologies.

The company has continued to secure overseas project orders this year. In February, SamsungE&A won an overseas chemical engineering project worth $2.4 billion, and in June, it secured a $790 million water treatment project in the Middle East. It is currently participating in bids for projects in the fertilizer and gas sectors in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

A SamsungE&A official stated, “This is a flagship project for a client with whom we have a long-standing relationship of trust in our home market of Saudi Arabia,” adding, “We plan to actively respond to the growing global demand for fertilizer plants by successfully executing the project using our concentrated technical expertise and experience.”
