[Edaily Reporter Kang Min-koo ] kakaopay(377300)has released trends in holiday pocket money based on data from its "Money Transfer Envelope" service over the past five years.
kakaopay analyzed the amounts sent to parents’ generation via “Money Envelopes” during the Chuseok holiday period over the five-year span from 2021 to 2025. The results showed that the average amount in a “Money Envelope” sent to parents’ generation during last year’s Chuseok was 213,000 won. This represents a 38% increase over the five-year period compared to the 2021 average of 154,000 won.
When broken down by age group, the average amount sent to parents during last year’s Chuseok was as follows: △190,000 won for those in their 20s, △220,000 won for those in their 30s, and △243,000 won for those in their 40s.
The amount of Chuseok pocket money given by parents to their children also showed a steady upward trend. The average amount in 2025 was 114,000 won, a 16% increase compared to 2021. By age group, last year, △teens received 86,000 won, △those in their 20s received 119,000 won, and △those in their 30s received 170,000 won.
An analysis of the amounts received via kakaopay during the Chuseok holiday period by students—regardless of the sender’s age group—also revealed an upward trend in pocket money.
The survey also found that the Chuseok allowance received by middle and high school students, as well as college students, has been steadily increasing each year. As of Chuseok 2025, middle school students received an average of 71,000 won, high school students 86,000 won, and college students 91,000 won. The average allowance for middle school students rose by 37% compared to 2021, marking the highest rate of increase among the student groups analyzed.
To gauge users’ perceptions regarding the preparation of holiday allowance, a poll was conducted on “Pay Attention” under the theme “How do you determine the amount of Chuseok allowance?” A total of 23,322 people participated; 48% of all respondents selected “I give the same amount every year,” while 30% chose “I adjust it to reflect inflation.”
A kakaopay spokesperson stated, “We planned this content to provide insights based on actual money transfer data and users’ honest thoughts for those who struggle with deciding how much pocket money to give their parents every holiday,” adding, “We hope that this upcoming Chuseok will be a time for families to share warm sentiments with each other through kakaopay.”
