[Edaily Reporter JAEMIN SONG ] Lisa Su, Chairwoman and CEO of AMD, is returning to South Korea for the first time in seven months. While she is scheduled to meet with domestic artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor companies and government officials, attention is also focused on whether an additional meeting with SamsungElectronics will take place.

According to government and semiconductor industry sources on the 30th, plans are being actively considered to hold a roundtable discussion in Seoul on the 8th of next month, with Chairwoman Su in attendance. Arrangements are underway for the roundtable to include CEOs from major domestic neural processing unit (NPU) companies such as Rebellion, DeepX, and Mobilint.

Chairman Su is also expected to meet with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyung-hoon during his visit to South Korea. The Ministry of Science and ICT and AMD signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) last July to collaborate on the AI semiconductor ecosystem. Key areas of cooperation include building and demonstrating AI computing infrastructure that integrates AMD’s central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) with domestically produced NPUs, establishing domestic AI research hubs, and fostering talent.

There is also speculation about potential meetings with major domestic companies, including SamsungElectronics. During his visit to South Korea last March, Chairman Su met with SamsungElectronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee at Seungjiwon to discuss cooperation in the AI semiconductor sector. He also held a separate meeting with Jeon Young-hyun, CEO of SamsungElectronics and Vice Chairman of the Device Solutions (DS) Division.

If the two sides meet again this time, follow-up discussions on the semiconductor business cooperation discussed last March are likely to continue. As AMD is expanding its business while catching up to NVIDIA in the AI accelerator market, there is interest in whether it will expand its cooperation with SamsungElectronics in the production of advanced memory—including High Bandwidth Memory (HBM)—and semiconductors.

However, Chairman Lee is currently on an overseas business trip. Following his recent attendance at the Korea Society’s annual dinner in New York, he is scheduled to attend a gala dinner on the 30th in London, England, for the overseas touring exhibition of the late Lee Kun-Hee’s donated collection (the KH Collection). This is a pre-opening event ahead of the special exhibition at the British Museum, which opens on the 1st of next month. With about a week remaining until CEO Su’s visit to South Korea, it appears that whether a meeting takes place will depend on Chairman Lee’s return to the country and his domestic schedule.

Meanwhile, Chairman Su is also expanding his engagement with the Korean AI ecosystem ahead of AMD’s AI event, “Advancing AI Korea,” to be held in Korea this November. This marks the first time AMD is hosting “Advancing AI,” its flagship AI event, in Korea.
