[Edaily Reporter Kwon Oh Seok ] VIRNECT Co., Ltd.(438700), a company specializing in extended reality (XR), is partnering with the Nakdong River Basin Headquarters of the Korea Water Resources Corporation to advance technologies for precision inspections of dam facilities and remote collaboration using smart glasses. VIRNECT Co., Ltd. announced on the 12th that it has begun developing technology centered on these initiatives in collaboration with the Nakdong River Basin Headquarters. This project is being carried out as part of the “2026 Public-Private Partnership Open Innovation (Everyone’s Challenge: Climate Tech)” support program, organized by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and Incheon Technopark. The core of the initiative is to link digital twin and BIM (Building Information Modeling) data from the dam safety management system established by K-water to the smart glasses worn by field inspectors in real time. Previously, K-water established a smart dam safety management system—integrating drones, artificial intelligence (AI), big data, BIM, and digital twins—for 37 national dams across the country (20 multipurpose dams, 14 water supply dams, and 3 flood control dams). The technology currently under development directly links 3D facility data to the inspection site, enabling immediate access to past damage histories and inspection checklists. As a result, field inspectors can intuitively view location- and inspection-item-specific guidance through their smart glasses, allowing even junior staff with limited experience to perform precise inspections according to standardized procedures. In addition, the system is equipped with WebRTC-based real-time video and audio sharing capabilities, creating an environment where on-site conditions can be immediately shared with remote experts in the office and real-time coaching can be received. VIRNECT Co., Ltd. plans to expand this technology into the field of AI-based facility safety management in the future. The company is considering the phased introduction of predictive maintenance technology, in which AI automatically classifies and tags facility defects—such as cracks or corrosion—and analyzes aging trends using inspection history and environmental data. The total project duration is eight months. VIRNECT Co., Ltd. plans to validate the solution’s on-site usability and effectiveness by piloting it at one dam facility under the jurisdiction of the Nakdong River Basin Headquarters. Subsequently, the company intends to expand the scope to all dam sites nationwide operated by the Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water), while also aggressively expanding its business into public and private markets requiring inspections of large-scale infrastructure such as power generation, energy, and industrial plants. VIRNECT Co., Ltd. stated, “The core of this project is to closely integrate the dam digital twin and BIM data established by the Korea Water Resources Corporation so that field inspectors can directly utilize them via smart glasses,” adding, “Building on the results of this pilot, we will accelerate the application of this technology to the inspection and maintenance of public infrastructure facilities.”
