[Edaily Reporter Kim Hyun-ah ] Data center semiconductor company FADU INC.(440110)has unveiled a new technology that improves the storage efficiency of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. This technology enables SSDs to directly understand and process files, thereby reducing the load on the central processing unit (CPU) and minimizing data access latency.

FADU INC. announced on the 15th that it unveiled its “File-Semantic SSD (FS-SSD)” at the “2026 OCP Global Summit,” held at the San Jose Convention Center in California, U.S., from the 12th to the 15th (local time).

Unlike conventional solid-state drives (SSDs), which process data in blocks, the FS-SSD understands and processes requests on a per-file basis. By integrating file-processing firmware into FADU INC.’s 6th-generation SSD controller, the company enabled the SSD to perform tasks—such as file searches, access permission checks, and file address translation—that were previously handled by the server’s CPU and operating system.

As a result, the SSD is designed to allow accelerators—such as graphics processing units (GPUs) and data processing units (DPUs)—to read and write files directly from the SSD without going through the CPU or the host file system. This is achieved by encapsulating file requests within standard NVMe commands.

As AI training and inference become more widespread, the need for repeatedly reading large-scale data and saving model states is increasing. In existing systems, accessing files requires going through the CPU and the host file system, which causes latency and consumes CPU resources. FADU INC. explained that the FS-SSD reduces these processing steps to improve data access efficiency and simplifies the CPU, memory, and software layers of storage servers, thereby lowering power consumption and operating costs.

FADU INC. plans to evolve the FS-SSD into a DPU-based storage server and scalable file storage solution, and provide related design specifications to its OEM and ODM partners.

The company also unveiled its 6th-generation SSD controller, the “FC6161,” at the event. In a live demonstration using a 16TB SSD, the company stated that the controller delivered performance up to 2.5 times faster than the previous 5th generation (Gen5). Actual performance may vary depending on product configuration and operating conditions.

According to FADU INC., the power consumption of finished SSDs based on the Gen6 controller is less than 28W during sequential write operations and less than 5W in standby mode. The controller’s own power consumption is less than 6W during read operations and around 7W during write operations.

Nam Yi-hyun, CEO of FADU INC., stated, “AI data centers require various factors such as power efficiency, stable latency, power management, and cooling,” adding, “Based on our controller technology, we will expand our AI storage solutions business, including the FS-SSD.”
