“Paradise Lost” is a psychological thriller that begins when Ryu Seon-woo (played by Bae Hyun-sung)—whom his mother, Ryu So-young (played by Kim Hyun-joo), had believed to be dead after losing him in a camping school bus disappearance nine years ago—miraculously returns alive.
Kim Hyun-joo, who has built a deep rapport with director Yeon Sang-ho, portrays “Ryu So-young,” a mother who lost her son, delivering a restrained emotional performance, while Bae Hyun-sung, in his first leading film role, plays the unfamiliar son “Ryu Seon-woo,” heightening the audience’s immersion in the story.
Notably, “Paradise Lost” has drawn significant attention by climbing to second place in overall ticket sales, surpassing not only “Odyssey”—which had long held a top spot—but also all other films released during the same period. This achievement is particularly meaningful given the strong competition from films across various genres.
Alongside “Chiikawa: The Secret of the Mermaid Island,” which holds the top spot in overall ticket sales, “Paradise Lost” is ranking high on the pre-sale charts, drawing attention to the box office competition expected to unfold following its release.
Previously, “Paradise Lost” was invited to the Special Presentations section of the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, where all four official screenings—totaling approximately 2,300 seats—sold out. It subsequently garnered attention at the 31st Busan International Film Festival’s Gala Presentations section, where all four screenings were also sold out.
