Kakao to Require 'Additional Verification' if an Account in Your Name Is Registered to Another User… Strengthening Measures to Prevent Identity Theft
New “Protect My Identity” Feature Introduced
Approve Registration Requests Directly from Your Existing Account
Verify via KakaoTalk message or email verification code
Set Up on the KakaoTalk and Kakao Account Websites
[Edaily Reporter Lee So-Hyun ] Kakao(035720)has introduced a security feature that requires users to undergo an additional identity verification process through their existing account whenever their name is newly registered on another Kakao account. This enhances protection against identity theft by allowing users to either approve name registration requests themselves or block registrations they did not initiate.

Kakao announced on the 22nd that it has introduced the “Protect My Name” feature for Kakao accounts.
“Protect My Name” is a feature that requires additional verification through an account where the same name is already registered whenever new identity verification information is added to a Kakao account.
For example, if a user’s name is about to be registered on another Kakao account, the user must personally verify from an existing account with the same name whether the request is legitimate.
Additional Verification via KakaoTalk Message or Email
Additional verification can be completed in two ways: by tapping “Allow” in a KakaoTalk message sent to the existing account registered under the same name, or by entering the verification code sent to that account’s email address.
If someone attempts to register under your name without your request, you can prevent the registration by not approving it.
This feature can be enabled or disabled in the KakaoTalk settings menu under “Kakao Account → Account Security.” It can also be configured via the Account Security menu on the Kakao Account website.
Kakao also offers two-step verification, country-specific login restrictions, Passkey, and QR code login to enhance account security.
A Kakao spokesperson stated, “‘Protect My Name’ is a feature designed to allow users to directly verify and manage the registration process under their name,” adding, “We will continue to strengthen security features so that users can use their Kakao Accounts more safely.”
