Jensen Huang: "No Signs of a Memory Supply Glut… The More, the Better"

Jensen Huang Dismisses Concerns Over a Memory Supply Glut in 2029 "The More, the Better for Memory… Demand for HBM and Other Products Continues"

[Edaily Reporter KIM YOON JI ] Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, said on the 22nd (local time) that it is unlikely there will be a memory supply glut by 2029. His remarks came amid a sharp decline in memory semiconductor-related stocks due to recent concerns over oversupply and slowing demand.
According to the U.S. business news outlet CNBC, CEO Huang said in an interview conducted at the GTC conference—NVIDIA’s developer conference held in Berlin, Germany, that day—that “one of the greatest advantages of memory is that you can always use more of it,” adding that “High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) will continue to be used for years to come.”
He explained, “We were the first company in the world to apply low-power DRAM (LPDDR), which is used in mobile phones, to data centers,” adding, “This allowed us to achieve performance that is twice as energy-efficient as any other technology in the world today.” He went on to emphasize, “We will continue to use this type of memory on a large scale in the future.”
Over the past week, stocks related to memory semiconductors have seen a sharp decline. This was driven by growing attention to forecasts that the semiconductor supercycle could end in 2029 due to a memory supply glut.

Memory is a core component of NVIDIA’s semiconductors. If a memory supply glut occurs, prices will fall, potentially hurting the profit margins of memory manufacturers such as SK hynix(000660), SamsungElectronics(005930), and Micron.
The sell-off in memory stocks was also influenced by a technology announcement from China’s Changxin Memory Technology (CXMT). Investors grew increasingly concerned that CXMT could erode competitors’ market share after the company unveiled a new design architecture capable of improving efficiency.
When asked that day whether he planned to collaborate with CXMT to use its memory products, CEO Hwang replied, “We are keeping an open mind.” He added, “We are collaborating with Chinese companies, and in fact, nearly every company in the world is collaborating with Chinese companies at some point in their supply chain.”
He went on to emphasize, “China possesses remarkable capabilities in foundational infrastructure technologies,” adding, “When comprehensively evaluating capabilities across the manufacturing sector, no country surpasses China. Therefore, we must take China’s capabilities very seriously.”
CEO Hwang also reiterated the argument that the U.S.’s tightening of regulations has actually spurred the development of China’s semiconductor industry. He explained that as U.S. regulations have tightened, China has accelerated its efforts to secure its own semiconductor technology and manufacturing capabilities.
“We have certainly accelerated China’s efforts to build its own semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and its state-level support for the semiconductor industry,” he emphasized, adding, “There is no doubt that we have catalyzed these developments.”
Nevertheless, CEO Huang expressed confidence that U.S. technology companies still possess strong competitive advantages. “U.S. technology companies are formidable,” he said, adding, “We are ready to compete against any opponent.”
Regarding NeoCloud companies such as CoreWeave—which have recently sparked widespread investor concern—he noted that while demand is exploding and these companies possess outstanding capabilities, a lack of capital is constraining their growth. He observed, “The demand for capital far exceeds the capital actually available,” but predicted, “This issue will ultimately be resolved.”
