[Edaily Reporter Choi Hee-jae ] The film "The Assassin(s)" continues its box office success, having surpassed the break-even point in its sixth week of release. According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated computer network, as of 7 a.m. that day, the cumulative audience count for "'Assassins'" stood at 3,401,825.
“The Assassin(s)” surpassed 3 million viewers just 20 days after its release. This marks the fourth-highest box office performance for a Korean film in 2026 and the film’s fifth consecutive week at the top of the weekly Korean film box office. Furthermore, it successfully surpassed the break-even point in its sixth week of release.
The production company noted, “This goes beyond mere box office records; it is a result of the film’s inherent power and the audience’s voluntary choice.” They added, “The fact that audiences accepted and judged the questions posed by the film from their own perspectives and shared their individual impressions means that this box office success reaffirms the significance of a theater culture where people freely appreciate and evaluate films.”
“The Assassin(s)” is a story that investigates the suspicions and the forces behind the assassination attempt on the First Lady on August 15, 1974, which shocked South Korea. Actors Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il, and Lee Min-ho star in the film.
Since its release, some critics have raised allegations of historical distortion, claiming the film portrays former President Park Chung-hee as the mastermind behind the assassination. Director Heo Jin-ho, who helmed the film, denied these claims in an interview last month with the YouTube channel “Bong Ji-wook’s Off the Record,” stating, “I did not make the film with that intention,” and adding, “It is too contradictory and implausible.”
*The Assassin(s)* has been recognized for its artistic merit, receiving consecutive invitations to the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, the 37th Singapore International Film Festival, the 28th Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, the 21st Paris Korean Film Festival, and the 46th Hawaii International Film Festival.
