[Joo Seong-min, CEO of Marummo] As some 12,000 fans sang along in unison with Lee Seung-chul’s voice, 40 years of history were woven into a single moment. Held on August 1 at the Inspire Arena in Incheon, the KBS Chuseok special “Your Life Is a Never-Ending Story – Lee Seung-chul” was a gathering where Lee Seung-chul’s musical journey intersected with the memories of an audience who have carried his songs in their hearts.

Lee Seung-chul looked back on the past 40 years by performing 26 songs over the course of 150 minutes. At the heart of the performance was a voice that effortlessly shifted between power and delicacy, making the 40th anniversary of his debut seem almost insignificant. The rich accompaniment of the “Emperor Band”—with whom he has performed for many years—and a 30-piece string ensemble further highlighted his vocal prowess. The immersive sound system, utilizing approximately 200 speakers installed throughout the venue, vividly conveyed even the slightest tremor in his voice.

The concert opened with “Hee-ya,” a signature song from Lee Seung-chul’s “Bu-hwal” era. As Lee Seung-chul emerged from a 7-meter-tall cube and descended on an aerial lift while singing the first verse, the audience erupted in enthusiastic cheers. This was followed by a medley of timeless hits such as “There’s No One Like That,” “The Last Concert,” “A Long Day,” “Don’t Say Goodbye,” “Western Sky,” and “That Person.” Every time a familiar intro began to play, the audience joined in as if they had been waiting for that very moment.

A surprise appearance by actor Park Bo-gum also created a special moment. Park Bo-gum played the piano himself before joining Lee Seung-chul in a duet of “I Love You So Much.” The warm chemistry between the two—whose connection began when Park appeared in the music video for this song—added a unique emotional touch to the performance. Performances by dancers such as Choi Ho-jong, Hyojin Choi, and Lee Hee-hye further enriched the show.

In the latter half of the concert, the atmosphere reached new heights as newly arranged versions of “My Love,” “Wandering,” “Even Today,” “Girls’ Generation,” and “Shout” were performed one after another. The setlist, which fluidly moved from lyrical ballads to rock and dance music, showcased the broad musical universe Lee Seung-chul has built. Colorful stage effects—including aerial lifts, giant video screens, lasers, drones, and large hot-air balloons—amplified the impact of Lee Seung-chul’s voice and the energy of the performance.

The scene in the audience was also impressive. Audience members spanning various generations—from young adults to middle-aged and older adults—waved light sticks and sang along to the songs. Couples, spouses, and families, each cherishing their own memories, were connected by the same songs. These songs—which represented first love for some, youth for others, and comfort for still others—created a space of shared emotion that transcended generations and time.

The song that most vividly embodied the concert’s theme was “Never-Ending Story.” As Lee Seung-cheol’s voice merged with that of the audience, “the 40-year story co-written by the singer and his fans” was brought to life. Lee Seung-cheol then brought the long concert to a close with “Amateur,” the encore song “Mali Flower,” and “Fate.”

This concert was not merely a celebration of Lee Seung-cheol’s past 40 years. It demonstrated that songs which have become memories of an era still resonate with today’s audience. His musical journey, spanning four decades, is now heading down a new path. Just as the concert’s title suggests, the story that Lee Seung-cheol’s songs will continue to tell is far from over.
