[E-Daily Reporter Choi Hee-jae ] The 52nd Seoul Independent Film Festival kicked off with a record-breaking number of submissions. Three short films produced through actor Byun Woo-seok’s production support project were selected as the opening films, while the festival also highlights new trends in independent cinema, such as the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and the rise of documentaries. In attendance were Executive Committee Chair Kim Dong-hyun, programmers Nam Da-eun and Kim Young-woo, and actor Kwon Hae-hyo, who serves as a planner and jury member for the Actor Project.
Co-hosted by the Korean Film Council and the Korean Independent Film Association, the Seoul Independent Film Festival is the nation’s largest competitive independent film festival. Beginning in 1975 as the Korean Youth Film Festival, it marks its 52nd edition this year.
◇1,917 Submissions—a “Record High”… Vigorous Independent Film Production This year’s submissions totaled 1,917, setting a new record. There were 1,715 short films and 202 feature-length films, an increase of 112 films compared to last year. Among the submissions, 228 films received production support, and 57 of those were selected for screening—accounting for 44% of all screened films.
This confirms that independent filmmaking continues steadily despite the coexistence of the film industry’s recovery and challenges in the production environment. In particular, attempts to incorporate AI technology into production stood out among this year’s entries.
Executive Committee Chair Kim Dong-hyun stated, “Since independent films are produced on a low budget, I believe AI technology can serve as a meaningful aid in the creative process,” adding, “While there aren’t many films yet that have been produced entirely with AI, it is being effectively applied to post-production and music composition.” He continued, “I believe the adoption of new technologies—such as efforts to reduce production costs or visualize screenplays—is also influencing the number of films being produced.”
The rise of documentaries was also notable. This year, 123 documentaries were submitted, and 72 were selected for screening. Feature-length documentaries accounted for approximately 36% of all feature-length submissions.
Programmer Nam Da-eun explained, “There has been an increase in films that go beyond merely depicting personal themes or traumas to address social issues and community concerns,” adding, “Works that explore issues such as COVID-19, social disasters, and civil unrest by connecting them to the conditions of individual lives stood out. Among these, documentaries were particularly prominent.”
Participation by female creators also increased. This year, 74 of the 140 directors were women, marking the highest number in the past five years. The proportion of female directors has remained above 50% for four consecutive years since 2023.
The jury for the Feature Film Competition consists of Director Kim Do-young, film critic Park In-ho, and Director Lee Jong-pil. Director Kim Mi-jo, writer Yoo Bo-ra, and Director Heo Jeong will serve on the Short Film Competition jury, while Directors Kang Yu-garam, Ahn Seon-kyung, and Lim Jeong-hwan will judge the New Choices section. Imbaal,” and Director Lee Ju-yong’s “Nowhere.”
“Self X Byun Woo-seok: Shorts On 2025” is a project designed to provide independent filmmakers with practical opportunities to plan and produce their works. Byun Woo-seok not only provided financial support but also participated in the planning process, proposed the theme “Love,” and took part in the judging.
Executive Committee Chair Kim Dong-hyun stated, “Actor Byun Woo-seok did not merely provide financial support; he also participated in the planning process and served on the judging panel,” adding, “He has expressed his intention to continue providing production support, and we are currently in discussions.” He went on to explain, “This year’s opening films were selected from a pool of 161 entries, and it will be fascinating to see how young filmmakers have interpreted the theme of ‘love.’”
Since 2009, the Seoul Independent Film Festival has been providing essential support for the production and distribution sectors to foster a sustainable independent film ecosystem. In 2024, the festival expanded its planning and development program in collaboration with the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) to include projects ranging from low-budget to mid-budget. This year, a new documentary category was introduced, and support for drama development was also added. Twelve mentors and 22 mentees participated, developing a total of 22 original intellectual property (IP) projects.
The “Actor Project—60-Second Monologue Festival,” a program for discovering emerging actors, has now reached its ninth edition. This program, which has been a launching pad for actors such as Hong Kyung, Noh Jae-won, Ok Ja-yeon, Yoon Ga-i, and Oh Kyung-hwa, received 5,706 applications this year. The 24 finalists, selected from a field of 2,380 applicants, will take the stage for the finals on the 30th at the CGV Cheongdam CineCity M-Cube Theater.
Kwon Hae-hyo, who is serving as the host for the 26th edition, said, “Actor Project was launched not merely to discover actors, but to cheer on struggling actors and to introduce new faces to the film industry—which is facing creative limitations—in order to spark inspiration.” He added, “Out of 5,706 applicants, 24 will have the opportunity to share the stage with both the audience and the directors.”
Solidarity among established directors continues as well. Director Yeon Sang-ho has been sponsoring the Seoul Independent Film Festival for three years, starting in 2024, when the film industry was facing a crisis of budget cuts. Director Ryu Seung-wan established the “Soft on the Outside, Strong on the Inside” Award in 2025 to discover emerging creators.
The Seoul Independent Film Festival will present a diverse lineup of programs, including the opening film, feature and short film competitions, as well as special sections such as “New Selections,” “Festival Choice,” “Local Cinema,” and the “Independent Film Archive” retrospective.
This year’s festival will take place over 10 days, from the 25th of this month through the 4th of next month, at CGV Apgujeong and CGV Cheongdam CineCity.
