[Edaily Reporter Han Kwangbeom ] Google is accelerating efforts to build the next-generation Android ecosystem and enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) services through its collaboration with SamsungElectronics(005930).

Google announced on the 23rd that it has applied its latest AI features and new migration capabilities from Android 17 to SamsungElectronics’ new foldable phones, including the “Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8, and Flip8.”

First, it is significantly expanding the scope of “Task Automation,” the first major feature of “Gemini Intelligence,” a proactive AI vision system. This feature, which allows Gemini to handle simple, repetitive tasks such as hailing a ride or ordering food delivery, is being expanded from support in a limited number of apps to over 40 popular apps. Gemini handles tasks such as shopping, making dinner reservations, planning trips, and purchasing concert tickets; on the Galaxy Z Flip 8, users can launch it directly from the Flex Window by long-pressing the power button.

Based on advanced reasoning capabilities, it can also understand content displayed on the screen or complex images and interpret them as prompts. Users can initiate tasks simply by showing a shopping list or a reference photo; they can then check the task’s progress step by step, make direct edits, or let it run in the background even with the smartphone closed.

“Gemini Notebook,” a reimagined version of the existing NotebookLM, also comes pre-installed on SamsungElectronics’ new foldable devices. Based on an advanced multimodal model, users can drag and drop various materials—such as photos, documents, whiteboard images, and voice recordings—into a workspace arranged side-by-side on the large screen to organize them.

Through the chat feature, users can ask questions about uploaded materials or generate personalized learning content such as slides, videos, quizzes, and podcasts. Purchasers of the new Galaxy Z series will receive a six-month trial of “Google AI Pro,” which provides access to advanced features like Audio and Video Overview.

The expansion of Gemini to wearables and XR (extended reality) devices is also continuing. On the Galaxy Watch 9, users can launch Gemini simply by raising their wrist—without needing a separate voice command. Two new frames for the intelligent eyewear (smart glasses) that Google is developing in collaboration with SamsungElectronics, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker have also been unveiled ahead of their launch this fall. Support for controlling the glasses with simple gestures will also be available for users wearing a Wear OS watch.

In addition, Android 17 introduces a new data migration feature designed to lower the barrier to entry for users switching from other operating systems. Without downloading a separate app, users can wirelessly transfer photos, videos, contacts, messages, and calendars stored on an iPhone—as well as Google accounts, passwords, Wi-Fi network information, and even eSIMs—to an Android device. This feature will first be rolled out to select Pixel devices and then expanded to other Android devices, including the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Z Fold 8 series.
