[Edaily Reporter Han Kwangbeom ] SamsungElectronics(005930)cited a “user-centric philosophy” and the optimization of materials and systems as the driving forces behind the hardware innovations in the 8th-generation Galaxy Z series, which was recently unveiled at “Galaxy Unpacked 2026.”
Moon Sung-hoon, Vice President in charge of hardware at the Development Division of SamsungElectronics’ MX Business Division, stated in an interview with the SamsungElectronics Newsroom on the 30th, “Our philosophy and goal is to create foldables that are thinner, more durable, and deliver a more powerful and intuitive experience with each new generation.”
“From the very beginning, we viewed foldables not merely as a new form factor, but as an opportunity to redefine how users interact with smartphones,” explained Vice President Moon. “Our greatest engineering challenge was to incorporate a larger, more immersive display; a device that is thinner and lighter while maintaining durability; and ultra-high performance that leverages the unique advantages of the foldable form factor—all into a single product.”
To address these challenges, SamsungElectronics designed the entire system as a unified whole rather than focusing on individual components. Vice President Moon explained, “Rather than optimizing individual components separately, we design the entire device as a single, connected system based on how users actually use foldables,” adding, “Through this end-to-end philosophy, we translate technological advancements into improvements that users can experience in their daily lives.”
“Flex Titanium” technology was cited as the cornerstone of innovation in displays and materials. Vice President Moon explained, “Our goal was to create a thinner and lighter foldable device without compromising durability or the viewing experience,” adding, “We had to redesign a new display support structure that would reliably protect the ultra-thin OLED panel while providing the flexibility required for repeated folding and unfolding.”
He emphasized, “While titanium possesses high strength and resistance to permanent deformation, the key lay in developing processing technologies, structural designs, and manufacturing techniques to make it suitable for repeated opening and closing.” This technology—comprising a titanium plate with a precision lattice pattern and a titanium alloy film one-third the thickness of a human hair—reduced the thickness of the display module by 10% and freed up internal space for the battery, heat dissipation system, and camera.
The battery and charging systems have also been completely redesigned. Vice President Moon explained, “Users expect longer battery life, faster charging speeds, and a thinner design,” adding, “We introduced a silicon-carbon anode material to increase energy density and optimized the entire battery to maintain long-term stability in high-voltage environments.”
He continued, “The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Fold8 feature a dual-path charging structure that independently controls two battery paths, improving heat dissipation and supporting 45W fast charging,” and added, “For the Galaxy Z Flip8, we applied a charging structure optimized for its compact design, tailoring the design to each form factor.”
A rigorous quality verification process was also highlighted. Vice President Moon said, “To verify reliability, we conducted over 100 tests reflecting real-life scenarios, including drops, repeated opening and closing, pressure, humidity, and foreign objects,” adding, “Our goal is to identify potential issues in advance and create products that users can trust.”
Vice President Moon emphasized, “Ultimately, Samsung’s goal is to create foldables that are thinner, more durable, and deliver a more powerful and intuitive experience with each new generation,” adding, “We will continue to pursue user-centric innovation rooted in users’ real-world experiences.”
