[Edaily Reporter Kim Hyung-il ] While both the KOSPI and KOSDAQ opened lower, the KOSPI extended its losses, while the KOSDAQ turned higher. The KOSDAQ, which had surged by over 6% the previous day—triggering its third “buy-side car” this month—fell early in the session but narrowed its losses before turning higher and regaining the 860-point level.

By sector, machinery and equipment are up 2.7%, posting the highest gain. Medical and precision instruments (2.25%), chemicals (2.23%), and manufacturing (1.62%) are also rising.

Overnight, the New York stock market fell amid concerns over index levels, the stalemate in U.S.-Iran negotiations, and caution ahead of the July Consumer Price Index (CPI) release. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.11%, the S&P 500 dropped 0.06%, the Nasdaq declined 0.32%, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 2.94%. This is believed to be due to West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices rising above $80 again as U.S.-Iran negotiations hit a snag.

Han Ji-young, an analyst at KIWOOM Securities, stated, “Rising oil prices and interest rates due to the stalemate in U.S.-Iran negotiations, along with the aftermath of a pause in the U.S. stock market, are triggering short-term profit-taking among small- and mid-cap stocks that have recently experienced a consecutive rally. This is expected to lead to a rotation in trading across market capitalization and sectors.” She added, “While a rebound in the KOSDAQ and small- and mid-cap stocks may continue over the remaining four trading days this week, it is important to note that potential upside catalysts for the KOSPI—such as earnings from U.S. tech stocks and expectations for shareholder returns from domestic semiconductor stocks—are on the horizon.”
