[Edaily Reporter PARK MIN ] The KOSPI, which had staged a sharp rebound the previous day, opened lower again just one day later. SK hynix, which had driven the market rally the previous day by announcing its largest-ever shareholder return policy, traded slightly higher today, but this was insufficient to lift the index. In particular, the KOSDAQ is down by about 3% as profit-taking selling pressure emerged in biotech, secondary battery, robotics, and semiconductor equipment stocks—sectors that had been strong for several days.
According to MP Doctor, as of 9:18 a.m. today, the KOSPI is trading at 6,783.37, down 69.21 points (1.01%) from the previous trading day. In terms of supply and demand, retail investors are net buying 70.8 billion won as they seek to buy at lower prices, while foreign and institutional investors are net selling 20.6 billion won and 109.1 billion won, respectively. Among all listed stocks, 74 are up and 781 are down, with declining stocks overwhelmingly outnumbering those on the rise.
Among the top market-cap stocks, the two leading semiconductor companies—SamsungElectronics and SK Hynix—are holding up relatively well, while profit-taking is evident in secondary battery, shipbuilding, and defense stocks.
SK hynix, which announced its largest-ever shareholder return policy the previous day, continued its upward trend, trading at 1,709,000 won—up 1.06%—as of now. SamsungElectronics remained slightly higher at 271,500 won, up 0.18% from the previous trading day, while SamsungElectronics(1P)(005935)posted a relatively sharp gain of 4.08%.
In contrast, SamsungElectroMechanics(009150)fell 4.51%, and SKSQUARE(402340)also dropped 1.25%. Automobile stocks HyundaiMotor(005380)(-1.08%) and KIA CORPORATION(000270)(-0.23%) also declined.
Rechargeable battery and biotech stocks also underperformed. LG Energy Solution(373220)fell 2.37%, and SAMSUNG BIOLOGICS(207940)dropped 1.91%. HANWHA AEROSPACE(012450), a defense stock, plummeted 5.31%, and HD HYUNDAI HEAVY INDUSTRIES(329180), a shipbuilding stock, also fell 2.63%.
At the same time, the KOSDAQ is trading at 811.05, down 3.55% (29.84 points). While 218 stocks rose, 1,426 fell, indicating a clear selling bias. In terms of supply and demand, retail investors are net buyers of 142.2 billion won, but foreign and institutional investors are net sellers of 80.3 billion won and 59.9 billion won, respectively, putting pressure on the index.
Alteogen Inc.(196170), the company with the largest market capitalization on the KOSDAQ, is trading at 318,000 won, down 6.33% from the previous trading day. Biotech stocks such as ABL Bio Inc.(298380)(-6.67%), SAM CHUN DANG PHARM CO. LTD(000250)(-6.56%), PharmaResearch(214450)(-1.33%), and Peptron, Inc.(087010)(-4.57%) were all trading lower.
Rechargeable battery stocks, including ECOPRO CO., LTD(086520)and ECOPRO BM CO., LTD.(247540), also extended their losses, falling 5.11% and 5.52%, respectively. Selling pressure continued in semiconductor equipment stocks as well. WONIK IPS Co.,Ltd.(240810)fell 2.81%, HLB INC.(028300)dropped 3.76%, and LEENO Industrial Inc(058470)declined 4.17%.
Robotics stocks are also performing poorly. Rainbow Robotics(277810)is trading at 447,500 won, down 5.09%.
Investor sentiment in the KOSDAQ market appears to be cooling as profit-taking selling emerges, particularly in growth stocks that have attracted market attention recently, such as secondary batteries, biotech, robotics, and semiconductor equipment.
Han Ji-young, an analyst at KIWOOM Securities, said, “Although the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index was strong today, driven by stocks like Micron, the domestic stock market opened lower, influenced by the Nasdaq’s weakness due to rising U.S. interest rates and Walmart’s poor earnings. We expect a sector-specific market to unfold depending on foreign investor sentiment.”
Overnight in New York, all three major indices fell as U.S. Treasury yields surged again and international oil prices rose. Although the U.S. Treasury Department launched a surprise Treasury buyback program to stem the sharp rise in long-term Treasury yields, the effect did not last more than a day.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 52,759.21, down 703.84 points (1.32%) from the previous session, while the S&P 500 closed at 7,641.16, down 66.82 points (0.87%). The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index closed at 26,067.17, down 263.93 points (1.00%) from the previous session.
The biggest factor weighing on the New York stock market that day was the renewed rise in U.S. Treasury yields. Although yields had temporarily stabilized the previous day after the U.S. Treasury announced it would expand the scale of its long-term Treasury buyback program, they resumed their upward trend just one day later. On that day, the yield on the 30-year U.S. Treasury note rose by about 4 basis points (1 bp = 0.01 percentage point) from the previous close to 5.24%. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which serves as a benchmark for U.S. interest rates, also rose by 5 basis points to 4.70%.
Among individual stocks, Walmart plunged 9.2% that day, marking its sharpest decline since May 2022. The stock’s decline was exacerbated by reports that Walmart’s second-quarter same-store sales in the U.S. posted their lowest growth rate in six years, along with signs that consumers are cutting back on spending due to high oil prices.
In contrast, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX), which comprises major semiconductor stocks, held up relatively well, closing at 11,800.02, up 61.79 points (0.53%). SK hynix American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), listed on the U.S. stock market, rose 4.43%, while Micron Technology rose 3.97%. Memory chipmakers Micron and SK hynix both posted gains of around 4%.
Analyst Han Ji-young stated, “While the government’s policy response may not be enough to trigger a sustained decline in interest rates, it can help moderate the pace of increases. Additionally, the fact that some uncertainty surrounding the Fed may be alleviated following Chairman Kevin Warsh’s speech at Jackson Hole (on the 29th) is worth factoring into investment strategies through next week.”
