[Edaily Starin YUN GI BACK Reporter] Director Christopher Nolan’s new film, “The Martian,” is on the verge of surpassing 8.5 million viewers and has entered the countdown to 10 million. Even as it approaches one month since its release, the film continues to maintain over 400,000 advance ticket sales, fueling its long-term box office success. Following its milestone of reaching 8 million viewers on the 24th day of its run on the 28th, the film added another 470,000 viewers in just one day, accelerating its box office momentum. It also reached the 8 million mark faster than any other film released this year. Notably, “The Odyssey” has surpassed the cumulative audience of approximately 8.45 million for “Spider-Man: A Brand New Day” and is accelerating its charge toward the 10 million mark. It has more than enough momentum to reach 10 million. As of 9:00 a.m. today, advance ticket sales for *The Odyssey* had surpassed 420,000. Given that massive demand for advance tickets continues even as the film enters its fourth week in theaters, its staying power is impressive. Currently, approximately 1.53 million viewers are needed to reach the 10-million mark. If the current box office trend continues, the film is expected to reach 10 million viewers during the first week of September. If it crosses the 10-million threshold, “The Odyssey” will become the second film this year to reach that milestone, following “The Man Who Lives with the King,” which drew over 16.9 million viewers. Reaching 10 million viewers would also mark another milestone for director Christopher Nolan. Nolan previously drew 10 million viewers in South Korea with “Interstellar.” If “The Odyssey” also reaches 10 million, he will have two films that have surpassed the 10-million-viewer mark in South Korea. Analysts attribute *The Odyssey*’s box office success largely to the “theatrical experience” centered around IMAX. It is the first film in history to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras, and by actively utilizing large-scale overseas locations and practical effects, it created a visual spectacle that is maximized on the big screen. The fact that it reimagined Homer’s classic “The Odyssey” using modern blockbuster techniques also helped attract a wide audience. With attendance now exceeding 8.5 million, the next milestone is 10 million. As “The Odyssey” approaches its one-month anniversary since release, with advance ticket sales showing no signs of cooling off, all eyes are on whether it will join the ranks of 10-million-viewer films in the first week of September.
