Distributor Studio Orca announced on the 31st, “The martial arts action film ‘Ip Man: The Legend,’ heralding the spectacular return of the legendary martial artist ‘Ip Man,’ has been confirmed for release in South Korea on September 10.”
Set in 1950s Hong Kong, “Ip Man: The Legend” is a martial arts action film depicting “Ip Man’s” struggle to protect the people against Western forces and criminal organizations that threaten the martial artists’ way of life. As the film is generating buzz for its authentic martial arts action performed by actual martial arts experts, it is expected to be particularly welcome news for Korean action fans who have been eagerly awaiting “Ip Man’s” return to the big screen.
In particular, Dou Wuhang, who plays “Ip Man,” is a martial arts expert and actor with a background as a former wushu athlete—he even holds a gold medal from the World Wushu Championships—and he has added a higher level of realism and polish to the film’s action sequences.

The main poster, released alongside the trailer, captures attention with the striking tagline, “A man Bruce Lee respected—he’s back,” announcing the return of the legendary martial artist “Ip Man.” The image of “Ip Man” striking a Wing Chun pose while surrounded by numerous opponents, alongside the fiercely burning Mokin-jang emblem beside him, foreshadows the intense battles to come.
Added to this are the numerous figures surrounding “Ip Man” as if to encircle him, along with opponents already lying defeated on the ground, heightening curiosity about what crises he will face. In particular, the depiction of the wooden dummy—a symbol of Wing Chun—engulfed in flames builds anticipation for an intense showdown that will test the tradition and pride of martial arts.
The main trailer, released alongside the still, makes a powerful statement right from the start with the appearance of “Ip Man,” who emerges with the line, “I am Ip Man of Wing Chun.” This is followed by the tagline, “The name history remembers,” as Western forces enter the scene, creating a tense standoff with “Ip Man” that heightens the suspense.
In particular, a non-stop succession of diverse action sequences unfolds—from a fight set amid massive flames to multi-person action scenes where he faces numerous opponents amidst cascading water, and an intense showdown where he goes head-to-head with Western martial arts. With an expanded action scale utilizing various locations combined with the actors’ solid martial arts skills, the film is expected to satisfy fans who have been eagerly awaiting authentic martial arts action.
The 2020 film “Ip Man 4: The Finale” drew 72,000 viewers in South Korea. At the time, actor Jian Zidan portrayed the role of Ip Man.
