[Edaily Reporter Kim Kani] Shares of action camera maker GoPro (GPRO) soared on news that the company is entering the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure market through a merger with optical firm Starman Optical.
On the 1st (local time), GoPro’s stock price closed at $1.23 during regular trading hours, surging 41.38% from the previous day.
According to CNBC, GoPro announced that it has signed a definitive merger agreement with Starman Optical, a privately held photonics company, and will expand its business scope into AI data centers and the defense industry.
The move to diversify beyond its existing action camera-focused business into the high-growth AI infrastructure and defense optics markets significantly boosted investor sentiment.
As a result of the merger, GoPro shareholders will receive a total of $285 million in cash, equivalent to $1.14 per share. GoPro will remain listed on the Nasdaq following the merger, and its existing debt of $92 million is scheduled to be repaid upon the completion of the transaction.
GoPro CEO Nicholas Woodman stated, “Through this merger, we expect to grow in the consumer, commercial, and defense markets and expand our business into key areas related to national security, such as cameras, optics, and AI infrastructure.”
