[New York = E-Daily Seong Joowon Correspondent] U.S. President Donald Trump stated that an agreement to end the war with Iran could be reached. It was also reported that a Qatari mediation team visited Iran to discuss a potential agreement. Following the Iranian president’s announcement that he had received authorization from the Supreme Leader to resolve the crisis through dialogue, efforts to seek a diplomatic solution are continuing.

According to Reuters on the 2nd (local time), President Trump said that day that Iran wants an agreement to end the war and that such an agreement “could be reached.” However, he did not immediately provide details on specific conditions or the progress of the negotiations.
Reuters also reported that U.S. Vice President JD Vance said the same day regarding negotiations with Iran, “There has been some progress, and we will see if further progress can be made.” Vice President Vance stated that the U.S. had not set a deadline for Iran to reach an agreement before resuming attacks.
An official briefed on the talks told Reuters that a Qatari mediation team visited Tehran that night to discuss the possibility of an agreement between the U.S. and Iran with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Agharchi.
The official explained that discussions were proceeding based on a draft agreement that had been negotiated over the past eight days. However, the details of the draft or the scope of what both sides had agreed upon were not disclosed.
Earlier that day, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also stated that the government was pursuing a resolution through dialogue. According to Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, he said, “The Supreme Leader has granted the government certain authorities.”
However, he did not specify the scope of the authority granted by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. It also remains unclear whether Iran has changed its existing negotiating conditions or expanded its room for compromise.
Key differences between the two sides remain. According to Bloomberg, Iran wants the U.S. to lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports, ease sanctions, and unfreeze assets before reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S., on the other hand, is demanding concessions regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
Secretary Agrach stated that Iran had presented its conditions and proposals, adding, “Everything depends on U.S. political reason.” While he indicated that Iran would be willing to reopen the Strait and resume negotiations if the conditions were accepted, he warned that Iran would respond more forcefully if the U.S. launched military operations.
Ali Baez, head of the Iran Project at the International Crisis Group (ICG), told Bloomberg that the Supreme Leader has granted the government a narrow negotiating mandate with clear limits. He explained that Iran seeks a lasting peace that would allow it to restore its deterrence capabilities, rather than a temporary ceasefire until the next conflict.
President Trump’s mention of the possibility of an agreement and the visit by the mediation team indicate that negotiations are ongoing. However, since neither side has officially confirmed the terms of an agreement, it remains to be seen whether a deal will actually be reached, pending the outcome of further discussions.
