LG Display announced on the 3rd that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the National Institute of Ecology, which operates under the Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment, to conserve and restore ecosystems near its facilities and to prepare for natural capital disclosure.

Under this agreement, both parties will share ecological information, as well as provide education and consultation necessary for natural capital disclosure assessments, and jointly identify ecosystem conservation and restoration projects to be carried out around the Paju facility. Environmental issues identified during the assessment process will be incorporated into actual ecosystem protection activities, and the related results will be utilized in sustainability reporting.

As a first step, they will create and manage habitats within the Civilian Control Line of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), near the Paju facility, where endangered species such as the red-crowned crane and the white-naped crane can reside safely. Leveraging the expertise of the National Institute of Ecology, they will systematically compile ecological data surrounding the facility and develop concrete biodiversity conservation initiatives.

Natural capital disclosure is a system for identifying and disclosing not only the impact of a company’s business activities on the natural environment and biodiversity but also the financial risks and opportunities that changes in the natural environment may pose to the company. International discussions on this topic are expanding, centered around the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), which was launched in 2021.

LG Display is also promoting an Artificial Intelligence Transformation (AX) initiative to reduce the environmental impact of its products. By integrating AX into the assessment of the entire product life cycle—from raw materials through manufacturing, transportation, use, and disposal—the company has established a system that manages carbon emissions data and automatically calculates and summarizes emissions at each stage.

Kim Sung-hee, Chief Safety and Environment Officer (CSEO) at LG Display, stated, “Through our collaboration with the National Institute of Ecology, we will systematically assess the impact of our business activities on nature and implement environmental management practices that lead to the conservation of local ecosystems.”
