A scene from the film “Tropic” (Photo courtesy of the Korea National University of Arts) The Korea National University of Arts announced on the 27th, “The short film ‘Tropic,’ produced by the Ark & Technology Lab (AT Lab) at the Center for Convergence Arts, won the Best Cinematography Award in the International Short Film category at the 30th Fantasia International Film Festival.” The Fantasia International Film Festival is North America’s largest genre film festival, showcasing fresh and original genre films. Held in Montreal, Canada, the festival opened on the 16th (local time) and runs through the 2nd of next month. “Tropic” tells the story of “Sun,” a protagonist haunted by nightmares about her older sister’s tragic suicide, who becomes trapped in a space where the boundaries between reality and memory are blurred. This film is a winning entry from a 2023 competition organized by the Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts) AT Lab—a creative and production research institute dedicated to the fusion of science and art—and the content production company VA Corporation. The competition invited submissions of feature- and short-length films on any topic utilizing virtual production, and two films were ultimately selected following a second round of judging. Director Park Jeong-yun, a student in the Department of Multimedia Film at the Korea National University of Arts’ School of Film, shared her thoughts on winning the award, saying, “I am very happy and honored to receive such a meaningful award,” and added, “It was an even more meaningful experience to receive such a warm response from the audience at the screening.”
