[Edaily Reporter An Yu-ri ] Kakaopay Securities announced on the 10th that it has launched a fractional trading service allowing users to invest in domestically listed stocks starting from 1,000 won.

This is the first retail service launched since the company obtained its investment trading license last month, expanding the fractional trading service—first introduced for foreign stocks in 2022—to domestic stocks. By lowering the minimum trading unit for domestically listed stocks to 0.0001 shares, investors can now purchase even high-priced stocks with small amounts of money. Since trading in whole-share units has been the norm until now, this is expected to significantly broaden access for young professionals just starting out and small-scale investors with limited financial resources.

The fractional trading service is available after agreeing to the terms and conditions in a comprehensive brokerage account. Purchases can be made by amount or quantity, while sales—limited to shares purchased in fractional lots—must be placed by quantity. Fractional orders are aggregated at designated times and processed in batches; orders placed outside these times are accepted as pending orders. When the total number of fractional shares held reaches one full share or more, they are automatically converted to a full share and can be traded just like regular shares.

The order system has also been designed to be intuitive. A prime example is the “mixed order,” which allows users to purchase both whole shares and fractional shares on a single screen. For instance, an investor wishing to purchase 2.5 shares of a specific stock need not place separate orders for 2 whole shares and 0.5 fractional shares; instead, they can simply place a single order for “2.5 shares.” Order history and account balances also display whole and fractional shares together at a glance, without distinction.

The company plans to start with three tradable stocks—SamsungElectronics, SK hynix, and ECOPRO CO., LTD—and expand the list gradually. Fractional trading will also be applied to existing services such as “Stock Savings” and “Reward Orders.” Purchase commissions for “Stock Savings” will be waived for both whole shares and fractional shares until the end of this year.

kakaopay Securities stated, “Following our support for fractional trading in foreign stocks, we are now extending it to domestic stocks to create an environment where anyone can start investing with small amounts without financial burden.” The company added, “We will continue to expand the range of tradable stocks and enhance user convenience so that users can develop investment habits tailored to their individual financial circumstances.”
