“How Does Our Network Score?”… LGU+, Establishes Evaluation Criteria for “Autonomous Operation” of Global Fixed-Line Networks

LG Corp. announced on the 26th that it had led the effort to establish the “Fixed Access Network Autonomous Network (AN) Level Evaluation Checklist for Fault Management” within the TM Forum, a global telecommunications industry consortium, and received official approval.

The fixed access network is the network domain connected to services directly used by customers, such as the Internet, IPTV, and Wi-Fi. While telecom operators have continuously increased the level of automation in their access networks to prevent outages in advance and reduce recovery times, there had been no official standards in place to objectively evaluate these capabilities. As a result, there were limitations in comparing operational levels across operators or verifying them against global standards.

To address these limitations, LGU+ proposed the development of an Autonomous Network (AN) level evaluation checklist for the Fixed Access Network Fault Management domain to the TM Forum, a global telecommunications industry consortium, and led the standard-setting process.

TM Forum is a global consortium comprising telecommunications operators and equipment manufacturers from around the world that develops industry standards and evaluation frameworks. This evaluation matrix was approved through TM Forum’s official procedures and is expected to serve as the certification standard for AN levels in the fixed access network sector going forward.

With the establishment of this evaluation framework, global telecommunications carriers can now assess and compare the level of fixed access network autonomy based on a uniform standard. Furthermore, based on the evaluation results, carriers can identify areas requiring improvement and formulate strategies for autonomous network operations, while equipment manufacturers can set development directions for solutions tailored to the requirements of telecommunications carriers. As such, the evaluation framework established by LG Uplus is expected to serve as a standard for the global telecommunications industry to systematically verify and enhance its fixed access network operational capabilities in the future.

Park Sung-woo, Head of the NW AX Group at LG Uplus (Senior Vice President), stated, “This evaluation framework is highly significant in that it enables the verification of fixed-line subscriber network automation capabilities—an area that previously lacked objective evaluation criteria—against global standards.” He added, “We will continue to collaborate with global telecom operators to expand standardization efforts for autonomously operated networks and drive network quality innovations that customers can tangibly experience.”
