According to MP Doctor on the 29th, the KOSPI opened at 6,844.41, down 45.33 points (0.66%) from the previous trading day, and as of 9:18 a.m., it was trading at 6,876.82, down 12.92 points (0.19%).
So far today, retail and institutional investors have been net buyers of 293.1 billion won and 91.1 billion won, respectively, while foreign investors alone have been net sellers of 460.4 billion won. By trading type, combined arbitrage and non-arbitrage trades show a net selling position of 235.2 billion won.
The KOSPI was also affected as the three major U.S. stock indices all fell yesterday (the 28th). On the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 51,481.51, down 0.67% from the previous trading day. The S&P 500 Index closed at 7,683.69, down 0.77%, while the Nasdaq Composite Index closed at 26,820.38, down 0.92%.
This is believed to be due to U.S. Treasury yields surging sharply again, which put significant pressure on the market. The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note surpassed 5.27% during the session, setting a new intraday high for the month, while the 30-year yield also broke through 5.5%, rising to levels near its highest since 2004. When Treasury yields rise, funds shift from the stock market to the safer bond market.
Han Ji-young, an analyst at KIWOOM Securities, said, “The stock market is expected to open lower today due to the sharp rise in the U.S. 10-year yield, weakness in U.S. semiconductor stocks triggered by OpenAI, and SamsungElectronics’ ex-dividend date. However, since the negative news from OpenAI was already priced in yesterday, the market is projected to recover its losses during the session as bargain-hunting flows in amid the perception that the index has fallen too far.”
Earlier, OpenAI announced it had temporarily suspended training on its top-tier model for safety reasons, introducing uncertainty into the Agent AI narrative. As for SamsungElectronics, which is paying dividends, today is the ex-dividend date, meaning investors will not receive the dividend and the stock price may drop by the amount of the dividend.
One analyst explained, “While it is true that the discussion on ‘AI speed control’ led to an actual suspension of training—rather than being a mere declaration—has dampened investor sentiment, this suspension is largely temporary,” adding, “It is important to note that other Agent AI model companies, such as Meta and Anthropic, have not yet taken similar measures.”
He added, “With major events—such as Micron’s earnings report, U.S. September employment data, and South Korea’s September export figures—on the horizon later this week that could reverse the market’s sentiment, a strategy of selling stocks in response to future volatility is expected to yield little benefit.”
All top-market-cap stocks are trading lower, with the exception of SamsungElectroMechanics(009150). SamsungElectronics(005930), which is in its ex-dividend period today, is trading at 267,000 won, down 3,000 won (1.11%), while SK hynix(000660)is trading at 1,763,000 won, down 5,000 won (0.28%). SamsungElectroMechanics is trading at 1,525,000 won, up 26,000 won (1.73%), buoyed by news of a massive investment exceeding 4 trillion won announced the previous day.
Meanwhile, the KOSDAQ index opened at 843.87, down 2.71 points (0.32%) from the previous trading day, and is currently trading at 839.63, down 6.95 points (0.82%) at the same time.
So far today, retail investors are the only net buyers in the KOSDAQ market, with net purchases totaling 153.2 billion won, while foreign and institutional investors are net sellers of 63.9 billion won and 75.7 billion won, respectively. By trading type, there is a net selling position of 81.0 billion won when combining arbitrage and non-arbitrage trades.
