[E-Daily Kang Gyeong-rok Travel Reporter] The alleys of Seongsu-dong, one of Seoul’s premier “hot spots.” Long lines of people—known as “opening rush” queues—stretched out in front of stores even before they opened, and a relay of social media (SNS) “proof shots” continued as people in their 20s and 30s held local specialty breads and desserts in both hands. Local foods from South Chungcheong Province instantly captured the eyes and palates of trendsetters in the Seoul metropolitan area.

The Chungnam Culture and Tourism Foundation (Acting CEO Lee Han-soo) announced that the “2026 Western Inland Region Chungnam Culinary Journey Pop-up Store,” operated for three days from the 9th to the 11th at Chabot Seongsu in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, concluded successfully with over 4,000 visitors.
Planned as part of the Chungnam tourism campaign “Chungnam Travel Festa 2026,” this event goes beyond simply promoting local cuisine. It is based on a strategic long-term plan to directly attract young people from the Seoul metropolitan area to the region through its appealing culinary resources, targeting “regional economic revitalization” and “attracting a ‘relationship population’ (people who have formed ties with the region and visit regularly)—top priorities for local governments these days.

The response far exceeded initial expectations. An average of more than 1,200 people flocked to the event each day, creating a bustling atmosphere. A remarkable scene unfolded as the samples and promotional materials prepared by participating local businesses sold out early day after day amid an enthusiastic response from visitors.
Organized under the theme “Delicious Discoveries in Chungnam,” the pop-up store featured a full lineup of popular local brands representing the province. Highlights included stone-oven bread from Cheonan’s “Tujuru”—a mecca for so-called “bread pilgrimages”—as well as walnut cookies from Asan’s “Jeonghodu” and coffee from Yesan’s “Iri Rice Mill.” Consumers in the Seoul metropolitan area had the opportunity to sample a variety of local foods from South Chungcheong—items they would not normally have easy access to—all in one place.

Going beyond just a tasting event, the Foundation also operated a “Gastronomic Exploration Zone” within the venue to showcase regional specialties and a section offering customized travel itineraries, thereby maximizing the promotional impact for South Chungcheong tourism. Observers note that the event successfully demonstrated the excellent marketability and competitiveness of the region’s food products right in the heart of Seongsu-dong, a trendsetting neighborhood.
Choi Dong-seok, Head of the Tourism Business Division at the Chungnam Culture and Tourism Foundation, said, “We confirmed the intense interest of consumers in the Seoul metropolitan area in Chungnam’s food, as the items we prepared sold out early.” He added, “We will continue to present diverse content so that the success of such pop-up events does not end as a one-off event, but rather leads tourists from the Seoul metropolitan area to actually visit Chungnam, thereby injecting vitality into the local economy.”
