[Edaily Starin Choi Hee-jae Reporter] Director Park Hoon-jung, known for films such as “Shinsegae,” “The Witch,” and “The Tyrant,” returns to theaters with his new film “Sad Tropics,” which tells the story of a killer organization. Poster for the movie “Sad Tropics” (Photo courtesy of Mindmark) Distributor Mindmark announced on the 13th, “The film ‘Sad Tropics’ has been confirmed for release on November 25.”
“Sad Tropics” tells the story of members of the “Sad Tropics” assassin organization—who grew up like brothers—as they vow bloody revenge amid mutual suspicion following the death of their “Master.”
“Sad Tropics” is the latest film from director Park Hoon-jung, who has expanded the horizons of Korean genre cinema through works such as “New World,” “The Witch,” and “The Tyrant,” and is highly anticipated as a film that will showcase the essence of action noir. In addition to the intricate relationships between characters and an unpredictable narrative, the film is set to deliver genre-specific thrills through relentless “one-shot, one-kill” action.
“Sad Tropics” has received awards and invitations to prestigious international film festivals, earning praise as “an action thriller that builds to a climax as intensely as an opera,” “a stylish revenge drama,” and “an elegantly directed, brutal noir.” Trailer for the film “Sad Tropics” (Photo courtesy of Mindmark) Director Park Hoon-jung’s casting choices—actors Lee Shin-young and Park Yu-rim, with their fresh energy—are complemented by the powerful presence of Kim Myung-min, one of South Korea’s leading dramatic actors. Additionally, a large cast of Taiwan’s top actors—including veteran actor Park Hae-soo, as well as Lim Baek-hong, Jin Yi-mun, and Wang Bai-ge—has joined the project, promising an overwhelming synergy of performances that transcends borders and languages.
The newly released teaser poster instantly captures the viewer’s attention with the contrast between a hand clutching a gun—as if ready to pull the trigger at any moment—and a figure wearing a bizarre mask revealed beyond it.
The poster vividly captures the turmoil within the organization following the death of the supreme leader “Master” (Kim Myung-min), as suspicion spreads among its members. While the contrast between the gun-wielding hand and the masked figure draws the eye, it also heightens curiosity about the revenge and conflict that will unfold in the film.
The trailer, released alongside the poster, begins by heightening the sense of immersion from the very start with a somber voiceover declaring, “The Master is dead,” as it cuts to a lonely shot of the Master’s back. Next, the sight of “Lu” (Lee Shin-young) with a resolute gaze, “Jojo” (Park Yu-rim) displaying hostility, and “Jang” (Park Hae-soo) coldly assessing the situation reveals the tense suspicion and rifts within the organization, building suspense.
This is followed by the tagline, “Everything began to be stained with blood,” as a relentless gunfight and fierce swordplay erupt, foreshadowing raw, hard-boiled action that will fill the screen.
