[Edaily Reporter SOYEON KIM ] SK hynix is accelerating its push into the artificial intelligence (AI) memory market by establishing a new president-level organization in the U.S. The company has promoted President Ahn Hyun—who has led the development of next-generation AI memory, including High Bandwidth Memory (HBM)—to Head of the Americas, and appointed President Cha Seon-yong to lead research and development (R&D). President Yoon Pung-young has been appointed head of the Corporate Center, which oversees overall business strategy. This move is seen as part of a strategy to strengthen cooperation with U.S. Big Tech clients—who are central to the AI semiconductor market—while simultaneously focusing on next-generation technology development and global business expansion.

SK hynix announced on the 30th that it had carried out these executive-level personnel changes. The changes will take effect on the 1st of next month.

CEO Kwak No-jeong, who has led the company since March 2022, will remain in his position. The structure with Kwak No-jeong as the sole CEO is expected to continue. Observers note that these appointments focus on reorganizing SK hynix’s global business structure based on the competitiveness the company has secured in the AI memory market.

The company has established a new “Head of Americas” organization at the president level in the U.S. President Ahn, who previously served as Head of Development, has been appointed to this role. This move is interpreted as a strategic step to further strengthen technical collaboration with key clients and enhance local responsiveness as U.S. Big Tech companies expand their investments in AI infrastructure.

President Ahn is a key technology expert who has led the development of next-generation AI memory, including HBM and SOCAMM (a low-power server memory module). He is recognized for possessing global capabilities, having gained experience not only in technology development but also in business and strategy. Going forward, he plans to establish a business framework centered on major U.S. tech clients and lead efforts to strengthen technological leadership and R&D capabilities.

Analysts note that this personnel decision is particularly significant given the growing importance of joint development and technical collaboration between memory companies and Big Tech clients in the AI semiconductor market. It is seen as a clear indication of SK hynix’s commitment to deepening its cooperative relationships with clients by stationing a president who has led core technology development in the U.S.

Cha Seon-yong, President and Director of the Future Technology Research Institute, has been appointed as President in charge of Development, succeeding President Ahn. President Cha will continue to serve as Director of the Future Technology Research Institute and will oversee all aspects of R&D, from advanced technology research to actual product development.

President Cha is a preeminent expert in SK hynix’s advanced semiconductor technology field. The company expects President Cha to play a pivotal role in strengthening the link between future technologies and product development, as well as enhancing competitiveness in next-generation semiconductor technologies. This appointment appears to prioritize translating technological achievements into actual product competitiveness by strengthening collaboration between advanced research and product development organizations.

President Yoon Pung-young, who previously served as head of the SK SUPEX Pursuit Council and the SK hynix Global Growth Task Force (TF), has been appointed President in charge of the Corporate Center. President Yoon has accumulated experience in strategy, investment, business development, and artificial intelligence transformation (AX) within the SK Group. Since July of this year, he has led the SK hynix Global Growth TF, spearheading the formulation and execution of the company’s mid- to long-term growth strategies. He is expected to lead the company’s future growth strategies, including global business expansion and the identification of new growth engines.
