[Edaily Reporter KIM AH-REUM ] MOORIM PAPER(009200)’s paper airplane competition, which debuted in 2017, was held again this year as usual. The competition has contributed to the spread of paper airplane culture in Korea by transforming the game of flying paper airplanes into a sport with official records and rules. The overall winner receives an official champion record certificate issued by the Korea Paper Airplane Association, along with the Jinju Mayor’s Award, the Air Force Training Command Commander’s Award, and the Jinju Office of Education Superintendent’s Award. At the opening ceremony of the “7th MOORIM PAPER KOREAN CUP Paper Airplane Competition,” held on the 17th at the main stadium of the Jinju Comprehensive Sports Complex, participants—including Joo Pan-sik, Manager of the MOORIM PAPER Jinju Plant (fifth from the left on stage), and Lee Hee-woo, President of the Korea Paper Airplane Association (fourth from the left on stage)—simultaneously launched their paper airplanes to signal the start of the competition. This year, the competition featured even more exciting matches with the addition of a new event, “Relay Flying,” to the existing “Longest Distance” and “Longest Duration” categories. In particular, the “Relay Flying” event drew significant attention as it crowned the tournament’s first-ever family champion.
“Relay Flying” is a team event in which parents and children compete in pairs, with the parent catching the paper airplane launched by the child and launching it again. In the Super Cup—where the winning and runner-up teams from each division, ranging from preschool through elementary, middle, and high school, competed against one another regardless of age—Jo Eun-chan, a upper-grade elementary student, and his father, Jo Seong-gil, claimed the honor of becoming the inaugural official champions with a combined distance of 67.66 meters. “Pass-and-Fly” was an event that garnered intense interest even before the tournament began, with registration closing early—just three hours after the sign-up page went live.
In the “Longest Flight” Super Cup, middle school student Im Ji-hoon, competing in the Middle and High School Open Division, flew his paper airplane 69.55 meters to become the new official champion. Notably, Im is the son of last year’s “Longest Flight” champion, Im Byeong-wook; by leading father and son to the top for two consecutive years, they set a special record and showcased their exceptional “paper airplane genes.”
The honor of “Longest Flight” Super Cup champion went to high school student Hong Seong-yun, who has consistently competed in the MOORIM PAPER Paper Airplane Competition for three years. His record was 42.16 seconds. Hong also demonstrated his versatility across events by taking first place in the middle and high school general division of the “Longest Distance” regular league with a throw of 76.37 meters.
In addition to the challenge and joy of folding and flying paper airplanes for families at the venue, MOORIM PAPER also provided a space where participants could experience the diverse uses of paper in daily life and its environmental value. Participants enjoyed activities such as “Paper Camp,” where they made paper tables and paper sun hats convenient for outdoor use, and the “Harmless Paper Pool,” where they could splash around to their heart’s content, experiencing firsthand how a single sheet of paper can serve as a medium for sports, play, and family bonding.
