[Edaily Reporter SOYEON KIM ] SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. posted an operating profit of 407.8 billion won in the third quarter of this year, successfully returning to profitability compared to the same period last year. Analysts attribute this recovery to growth in the energy storage system (ESS) business and expanded battery supply to the European electric vehicle market. SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. plans to accelerate the development of next-generation technologies, including pursuing humanoid robot projects with multiple clients, with the goal of commercializing all-solid-state batteries in the second half of next year.
SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. announced on the 29th that its revenue for the third quarter of this year reached 4.6856 trillion won, a 52.6% increase compared to the same period last year (3.0714 trillion won). It also rose by 20.9% compared to the previous quarter (3.8765 trillion won). Photo: SAMSUNG SDICO.,LTD. Operating profit reached 407.8 billion won, roughly double the level recorded in the second quarter (203.8 billion won). This marks the company’s best performance since the third quarter of 2023 (496.0 billion won). The improvement in performance was driven by achievements such as: △ strengthening leadership in the U.S. ESS market; △ the full-scale launch of the LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery business; and △ securing next-generation technologies and new application areas.
By business segment, revenue in the battery division surged 55.3% year-over-year to 4.4099 trillion won. Operating profit reached 361.9 billion won, marking a return to profitability. The electronic materials division also maintained solid performance, driven by increased sales of semiconductor patterning materials and display film materials for foldable smartphones.
In particular, the company continues to secure orders in the U.S. energy storage system (ESS) market. SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. announced that, as of October this year, it had secured orders totaling more than 60 GWh (gigawatt-hours), primarily in the U.S. power market. Based on the current order volume, the company can operate its Ulsan production line and the StarPlus Energy (SPE) facility in the U.S. at full capacity through 2028.
SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. has also decided to prioritize the use of its Synergy Cells plant in Indiana as a production hub for high-demand ESS batteries. On the supply chain front, the company is responding to the “de-China” trend in the U.S. by signing long-term supply contracts for LFP cathode materials with major domestic material suppliers.
The LFP battery business is also gaining momentum. Starting this month, SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. began mass production of high-capacity prismatic LFP cells at the SPE plant in the U.S. The company also plans to prepare for the mass production of high-capacity, next-generation LFP products for ESS at the SPE plant in the future. In Europe, following the securing of an LFP battery project for electric vehicles, the company is continuing its efforts to secure additional orders. It recently unveiled cylindrical LFP cells for battery backup units (BBUs) and has begun targeting this market. SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. forecasts that the BBU market will see high growth of approximately 30% annually through 2030. This is because the demand for higher-capacity and higher-output BBUs is increasing due to performance improvements in AI graphics processing units (GPUs) and rising power requirements.
SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. is also focusing on securing a leading position in the next-generation battery market. With the goal of commercializing all-solid-state batteries in the second half of next year, the company is currently pursuing humanoid robot projects with multiple clients. It is supplying all-solid-state battery samples to clients for performance evaluation and is finalizing product specifications for mass production next year. In its cylindrical battery business as well, the company has secured client bases centered on new applications such as aerospace and humanoid robots. Supply volumes for these new businesses are expected to increase gradually starting next year.
