[Edaily Reporter Minji Son ] The skin organoid-based atopic dermatitis modeling technology held by KANGSTEM BIOTECH CO., LTD.(217730)has been selected as an outstanding achievement in the government’s health and medical research and development (R&D) program.

KANGSTEM BIOTECH CO., LTD. announced on the 10th that its patent titled “Method for Creating an Atopic Dermatitis Model Using Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Skin Organoids” was selected as one of the “Top 30 Outstanding Health and Medical R&D Achievements of 2026” by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Health Industry Development Institute.

The “Top 30 Outstanding Achievements” is an annual program in which the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Health Industry Development Institute select and announce Daesang-winning achievements generated through government R&D investment.

The selected research, titled “Development of Advanced Artificial Skin Production Technology and Skin Regeneration Therapy Based on Immune-Controlled 3D Human Skin Organoids,” was conducted with research funding from the Inter-Ministerial Regenerative Medicine Technology Development Project. Professor Kang Kyung-sun of Seoul National University, the founder of KANGSTEM BIOTECH CO., LTD., served as the principal investigator and oversaw the project.

KANGSTEM BIOTECH CO., LTD. acquired this technology through a technology transfer of the core technology held by Seoul National University; the company currently holds the relevant patents and is conducting R&D for commercialization.

The company explained that this selection is highly significant because it represents official government recognition not only of the technology’s originality and advanced nature but also of its industrial applicability and innovative potential. In particular, it reaffirms that the skin organoid-based platform technology possesses the competitiveness required to serve as a core technology in next-generation preclinical evaluation and the regenerative medicine field.

A representative from KANGSTEM BIOTECH CO., LTD. stated, “The skin organoid-based atopic dermatitis model, selected for this outstanding achievement, has been continuously refined through our in-house R&D activities since the technology was introduced from Seoul National University,” adding, “As a result, the platform utilizing skin organoids that replicate the actual condition of atopic dermatitis has already entered the commercialization phase.”

The spokesperson added, “The organoid-based disease modeling platform will serve as an innovative commercialization model capable of creating new value in the fields of new drug development and regenerative medicine.”
