The “U+119 Memorial Run” is a donation-based running event in which the public can participate directly; it was organized to honor the noble spirit of sacrifice of firefighters who died in the line of duty and to support their bereaved families. This year marks the second edition of the event, following last year’s inaugural run.
The full amount of the participation fee (50,000 won) paid by participants will be donated to “Firefighters’ Families Hope Sharing,” an organization for the bereaved families of firefighters who died in the line of duty, and will be used for memorial activities and support for the bereaved families. In the previous event, a total of approximately 2,300 people participated, including about 2,000 members of the general public and about 300 family members of firefighters.
The event features two categories: an 11.9-kilometer course symbolizing the fire service and a 5-kilometer course where family members and friends can run together. All participants will wear bibs bearing their own names along with the names and dates of death of firefighters who died in the line of duty. Registration is available on the official website.
Various memorial programs will also be held. Memorial messages submitted during the registration process will be displayed at the event venue on the day of the event.
At last year’s event, the “Salute to the National Flag” ceremony was conducted using the voices of fallen firefighters restored through LG Uplus’s AI voice synthesis technology, which deeply moved the audience. These voices were created based on recordings made during their lifetimes by the late Fire Captain Kim Su-gwang, who died in the line of duty at the 2024 fire in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang Province, and the late Fire Lieutenant Park Dan-bi, who died in the line of duty in the 2019 Dokdo helicopter crash.
Park Kyung-joong, Executive Vice President of External Relations at LG Uplus, said, “We hope that a culture of remembering the noble sacrifices of firefighters who dedicated their lives to protecting the lives and safety of the public, and expressing our gratitude to them, will continue to spread.” He added, “LG Uplus will continue to work with the National Fire Agency to carry out various activities that support firefighter families and promote social value.”
