[Edaily Reporter Kim Hyun-ah ] LG Uplus(032640)is set to target the public cloud market with Amazon Web Services (AWS) at the forefront. Following Samsung SDS, major domestic IT and telecommunications companies are entering the market for cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) transformation in public institutions based on global cloud platforms.

LG Uplus announced on the 12th that it has officially registered “LG Uplus Brokerage Service for Amazon Web Services,” a brokerage service for AWS Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), with the government’s Digital Service Utilization Support System.

What is the Digital Service Utilization Support System? The Digital Service Utilization Support System
is a distribution and contracting platform exclusively for the public sector, designed to enable the central government, local governments, and public institutions to search for and utilize digital services, such as private cloud services. Public institutions can compare and search for services registered on this system and proceed with the contracting process. Currently, various digital services—including IaaS, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), and cloud support services—are registered on the platform.

Service registration is not a simple notification process. After a service provider signs up and applies for review, submitting the relevant documents and proof of service capabilities, the “Digital Service Review Committee” evaluates the company’s eligibility and its ability to provide digital services. Only services that pass the review are notified of their selection and subsequently registered and made public on the support system. Applications for which all required documentation has been completed by the 25th of each month are submitted to the Review Committee the following month.

With this registration, public institutions can now access LG Uplus’s AWS cloud infrastructure brokerage service through the Digital Service Support System. From LG Uplus’s perspective, this secures an official distribution and contracting channel for supplying AWS to public institutions.

LG Uplus plans to go beyond simply providing AWS itself to support cloud deployment and operations tailored to the environments of public institutions. The strategy involves leveraging its own network, security, and cloud operations capabilities to design infrastructure that meets the specific operational and security requirements of each institution, and to support operations and efficiency improvements following the cloud migration.

The company also plans to expand its scope to include AWS-based public AI projects, such as generative AI-powered chatbots for citizen inquiries and operational support, AI-driven information retrieval, and the development of databases for administrative and statistical data management.
Samsung SDS and Others Are Already Providing These Services
Samsung SDS is also expanding its business—from consulting to cloud migration, deployment, operations, and application modernization—based on its partnership with AWS. The company launched AWS Managed Services in 2013 and has been expanding its public cloud operational capabilities through a strategic partnership with AWS.

Consequently, competition among domestic IT and telecommunications companies in the public cloud sector is expected to intensify further. In particular, as the cloud migration of public institutions expands beyond a simple infrastructure transfer to include generative AI and data utilization, implementation, operation, and AI transformation projects—carried out through collaborations between global cloud providers and domestic IT companies—are emerging as a new arena of competition.

Jeong Young-hoon, Senior Vice President in charge of LG Uplus’s Enterprise AI Business, stated, “We will support public institutions in adopting AWS cloud infrastructure more quickly and reliably, and provide operational systems optimized for each institution’s work environment and security requirements.” He added, “We will pool our AX business capabilities and expertise in AI service development and operations to support public institutions’ transition to cloud-native environments.”
